NID stands for The National Institute of Design. It is a top-ranking design institute in India. Internationally, it is praised as one of the premier multi-disciplinary institutions in the field of design education. It was established with the help of the Ford foundation and the Sarabhai family in Ahmedabad, in September 1961. By the National Institute of Design Act 2014, NID has been declared as the “Institute of National Importance “ by the parliament. It is an autonomous Institute which still believes in the tenets of Bauhaus design movement of “learning by doing”. It is also perceived as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, by the department of scientific and industrial research, by the government of India.


NID Entrance Exam is conducted by National Institute of Design (NID) which is held on the first week of January, 2020. It offers educational programs both at undergraduate and post graduate levels. It is a 2.5 to 5 years course. All aspirants applying for B.Des and GDPD and M.Des programs must achieve the criteria of both age and qualifications. The eligibility however varies from course to course.

The eligibility criteria for B.Des and GDPD programs are as follows:

  1. Age Qualifications: For the general category the upper age limit is 20 years as on June 30th, 2020 and the lower age limit requires candidates to be born on or after July 1st, 2000. And the upper age limit for the OBCs, SCs and STs is 23 years and for the lower age limit the candidates should be born on or after July 1st, 1997.
  2. Educational Qualifications: Aspirants who have passed or are appearing for higher secondary examinations from any recognizable board of education such as CBSE, ISC and the like are eligible to apply to for the entrance examination to the National Institute of Design.

The eligibility criteria for the M.Des program are as follows:

  1. Age Qualifications: The upper age limit should be 30 years as on June 2020 and for the lower age limit the candidate should be born on or after 1st July, 1990. For the OBC, SCs, and STs category the qualifying upper age limit is 33 years as on June 30th , 2020 and for the lower age limit the candidate should be born on or after July 1st, 1987.
  2. Educational Qualification:Aspirants should have a minimum 3 or 4 year Bachelor degree after the 12th standard or a full time Diploma of a duration of 4 years in either design, fine arts, architecture or applied arts after the 12th standard examinations.
  3. Only those candidates who are eligible with regard to age and educational qualifications can apply for the Design Aptitude test (DAT) 2020, also popularly known as the National Entrance for Examination for Design (NEED) which is an entrance exam for admission in National Institute of Design (NID). There is no specific or separate syllabus to prepare for DAT or NEED. The questions are basically based on general Communication Skills, Creativity, Drawing Skills, Sensitivity to Environment and Subjects of Design, Composition, General mental ability.

    Both B.Des and M.Des design aptitude tests comprise of two phases: The first phase is called DAT prelims which is a written test which has to be cleared before appearing for the second phase which is called DAT mains, which consists of a studio test.


  • Phase 1: Is a 3-hour test which is of 100 marks and the questions consists of both visual and textual. The test is conducted to measure the candidate’s finesse for Design Problem Solving, Mental ability, Observation and Perception, Communication Skills, Visual Sense, and Environmental Awareness.
  • Phase 2: This phase comprises of a Studio Test, which is divided into three further parts: Doodling, 3D modeling and an observation test which is followed by a Personal Interview and Portfolio Presentation.


  • Phase 1: This is too a 3-hour test which is of 100 marks and consists of two parts. Part A, is of 40 marks which is a Common Foundation and Part B, is of 60 marks which is a Specialization Paper.
  • Phase 2: This phase like the 2nd phase for the B.Des test, consists of a studio test, personal interview and portfolio presentation.
